Gross, net and employer cost in plain words

Gross salary is the amount in your contract before anything is deducted. Net salary is what actually lands in your bank account. The difference goes to pension, health and unemployment insurance and to income tax, which your employer withholds and pays on your behalf.

In many countries the employer also pays its own contributions on top of the gross salary. That is the total employer cost, and it is the number companies use when they plan a new hire. When you compare job offers between countries, look at the net amount, because the same gross salary can mean very different take-home pay.

Each country page explains its rules, the 2026 rates and the official sources we use. The numbers are an informational estimate for a standard full-time employee, not a payslip.

How much of the gross salary do you keep?

Net pay as a share of a typical gross salary in each country, 2026 rates, single employee without children.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net salary?

Gross salary is the agreed pay before deductions. Net salary is what you receive after employee contributions and income tax are taken off.

How do I open the calculator for my country?

Add the country code to the address, for example netsalarykit.com/de for Germany, /ba for Bosnia and Herzegovina, /us for the United States or /uk for the United Kingdom. The page opens in the local language, and every page has an English version too.

How do I calculate net salary in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

In the Federation of BiH, deduct 31% contributions, then 10% tax on the remainder minus the 300 KM personal allowance. In Republika Srpska, deduct 31% contributions and 8% tax on gross minus 1,000 KM. For 2,000 KM gross that gives 1,272 KM and 1,300 KM.

Can I calculate gross from a desired net salary?

Yes. Choose Net to gross, type the net amount you want and the calculator finds the gross salary and the employer cost that produce it.

Which countries are supported?

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Albania, North Macedonia, France, Spain, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States (federal taxes).

Are the results official?

No. They are informational estimates based on 2026 rates published by official institutions, which we link on every country page. Personal circumstances can change the final amount.

Is my data stored?

No. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to a server.
